Noma (Nee: Williams) Cleavenger Horner Spanzy

Noma Williams Cleavenger Horner Spanzy passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and service that touched all who knew her. Noma was born on October 23, 1927, at her grandparents’ farm along Anthony’s Creek in Neola, West Virginia. It was there, amid the gentle hills and quiet streams, that she spent her childhood years. After the early passing of her mother, Esther Williams (Sevey), Noma was lovingly raised by her maternal grandparents while her father, Robert Williams, worked to provide for the family. These early years in West Virginia shaped the warm, caring, and resilient woman she would become. Noma graduated from White Sulphur Springs High School before continuing her education at a business school near Bridgeport, West Virginia. It was there that she met her first husband, David Cleavenger. The two married and began their life together in Painesville, Ohio, eventually settling in Madison, where Noma would spend the majority of her life. Her journey through life included love and companionship with three devoted husbands: David Cleavenger, Robert "Dink" Horner, and Paul Spanzy—all of whom preceded her in death. Noma and Robert shared many years together at their home on Dock Road in Madison. After his passing, Noma found love again with Paul Spanzy. Together, they traveled the country, creating cherished memories until Paul’s passing. A devoted member of the Bible Baptist Church on Chapel Road in Madison, Noma lived her faith through service and kindness to others. For more than 35 years, Noma worked as a bartender at several beloved Madison establishments, including the Anchor Inn, Mother’s Lounge, North Ridge Lanes, and VFW Post 8548. She was also a proud and dedicated Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary at the VFW, where she poured her heart and soul into supporting veterans. Her volunteer work included countless hours at veterans’ hospitals and helping organize community parades and VFW events. Her service reflected a life committed to honoring those who served their country. Noma’s home was the heart of many family gatherings. She loved hosting holidays, cooking for friends and family, and creating a warm, welcoming space where all felt loved. Noma’s famous homemade Nisu bread was a family favorite, and she taught many of her grandchildren how to make it. Her generosity, sense of humor, and hospitality will be remembered by everyone who crossed her doorstep. Noma is survived by her beloved children: daughter Carol Lay (Richard) of Oakdale, PA; sons David Cleavenger (Dee) of Hickory, NC; and Dan Cleavenger (Martha) of Vista, CA. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Williams (Vicki) of Thibodaux, LA. Her legacy continues through her six grandchildren: Lisa Steward, Michelle Miller, Meredith Buzzeo, Sarah Asbury, Michael Cleavenger, and Rachael Long; and through her thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to her life. Noma was preceded in death by her father, Robert Williams; mother, Esther Williams (Sevey); stepmother, Grace Williams; brother, Rush Williams; and her husbands, David Cleavenger, Robert Horner, and Paul Spanzy.
