Margaret Jean Pennell, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted member of her community, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, in Chardon, Ohio. Born on October 10, 1943, in Youngstown, Ohio, Margaret lived a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering faith.
A woman of many talents and warmth, Margaret was known for her loving, welcoming nature and her wonderful sense of humor that brightened the lives of those around her. Throughout her life, she embraced various roles—from being a real estate agent and bookkeeper to most importantly, a devoted mother and wife. Her steadfast devotion to her family and friends defined her existence, as did her deep commitment to her faith as a devout Catholic of St. Mary’s Church in Chardon where she participated in the Prayer Shawl Ministries, a testament to her caring heart and desire to bring comfort and hope to others.
Margaret’s life was rich with moments that celebrated togetherness. She treasured spending time with her family and friends, especially during the holidays and family gatherings, where her kindness and warmth made everyone feel truly at home. She was a beloved Girl Scout troop leader, a host of Friday football dinners, and a passionate lover of flowers, knitting, and baking—activities through which she expressed her nurturing spirit and creativity. Among her proudest accomplishments are her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, whom she cherished (most days).
Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love nurtured within a close-knit family. She is survived by her husband, William Pennell; her children William Pennell Jr., Melisa Schneider (Mark), Carrie Pennell (Vic Blalock), Michael Pennell (Erin), Richard Pennell (Erin), Ann Pennell, and Gary Croson. Her legacy will continue on with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Dylan, Savanna, Kayla, Tiffany, Mackenzie, Sierra, Lauren, Anthony, Caleb, Emily, Liam, Ryder, Finley, Brody, William, and Ada. Their lives are richer for having had such a devoted mother and (great) grandmother. She now rests alongside her beloved daughter Charlene Croson, sister Geri Tomko, and her parents Ann and Michael Matasic, who preceded her in death.
Her presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered through the many lives she touched with her gentleness and joy. To honor Margaret's memory, visitation will be held on April 10, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Potti & Marc F. Burr Funeral Homes in Painesville, Ohio. Another visitation will follow on April 11, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Mary Parish in Chardon, Ohio, with a Mass celebrating her life beginning at 11:00 AM. Followed by the burial at Hambden Township Cemetery in Hambden, Ohio. Her family will be hosting a gathering at the Hambden Town Hall following the burial.
In memory of Margaret, her family are asking for donations to the Siedman's Cancer Center in lieu of flowers.
Margaret Jean Pennell’s legacy of love, laughter, and faith remains a guiding light to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will always be remembered as a nurturing soul who devoted her life to her family, her community, and her faith. Her gentle spirit and compassionate heart continue to inspire all who loved her.
