Janice D. (née Ticel) Kondik, age 86, of Fairport Harbor, passed away on March 4, 2025, at Tripoint Medical Center after an illness. She was born on August 23, 1938, in Painesville to Peter and Elizabeth (née Chader) Ticel and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church, Red Hat Society and the Fairport Senior Center. She was involved in the Fairport Harbor Community Days, Fairport Harbor Marine & Lighthouse Museum and the Finnish Heritage Museum. She helped with Vacation Bible School, Project Hope, Mantua Garden Club and she was a Prayer Warrior. Janice is survived by her son, Terry Ticel of Lawrence, KS; her daughter, Michelle “Missy” Colonel (Retired), USAF, (Robert) Aastrom of Castroville, TX; her grandchildren, Jessica Aastrom of Wasilla, AK, and Taylor Aastrom of Anchorage, AK; her great-grandchildren, Jaxon Hollis and Rylen Hollis, both of Wasilla, AK; and her brother, Ronald Ticel of Fairport Harbor. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Elizabeth Ticel, and her brother, Donald Ticel. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Hungarian Reformed Church, located at 601 Plum Street in Fairport. Calling hours are scheduled for Friday, March 14, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Potti & Marc F. Prior to her death she was to receive the Golden Beacon Award on March 22, 2025. Below is the proclamation from that award:
Whereas: Janice Kondik has been selected by the Fairport Harbor Civic Club to receive the award as the 2025 “Golden Beacon Award”; and
Whereas:: Janice is a longtime resident of Fairport Harbor and is a 1957 Fairport Harding High School graduate. Janice has two children, Terry Ticel and Col. Michelle Aestrom. She has two siblings, Ron Ticel and Donald Ticel. She has two grandchildren, Jessica and Taylor, along with two great grandchildren, Jackson and Rylan. Janice was employed with the Diamond Shamrock Alkali; and
Whereas: She was recognized with a certificate of appreciation by Lt. General Robert Miller, U.S. Air Force Medical Services by USAF, MC, SFS Surgeon General for her daughters thirty-five year service; and
Whereas: Janice is a member of the Fairport Harbor Civic Club, Finnish Heritage Museum, Fairport Harbor Senior Center, Fairport Harbor Tourism Council, Red Hats and, also, belongs to Dave Roder Veterans Association helping veterans. She is a member of the Consistancy Business for the Hungarian Reformed Church; and
Whereas: She helps to raise funds through Chicken Paprikas dinners and Christmas boutique. As a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church Fellowship committee, she assist with a monthly coffee social. She sends birthday cards to HRC members, called “Keep in Touch”. She is a 3rd generation Hungarian; and;
Whereas: In her spare time, Janice collects dolls and books. Some of the dolls she owns are miniature replicas of U.S. soldiers in all branches of the service, which are used for Veteran presentations. Her favorite author is Danielle Steele. She enjoys sewing and crocheting. She also enjoys growing vegetables and flowers in her garden.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE MAYOR OF THE VILLAGE OF FAIRPORT HARBOR, COUNTY OF LAKE, STATE OF OHIO, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1, That the Village of Fairport Harbor does hereby recognize and honor Janice Kondik as this year’s Fairport Harbor Civic Club “Golden Beacon Award” recipient.
