Gerald J. Krauter, age 87, of Madison, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the Hospice Care Center in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 22, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work and generosity, “peppered” with humor!
Jerry was born to Pauline and Joseph Krauter on June 25, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in Cleveland, but moved “to the country”—Madison, where he lived the remainder of his days. Jerry graduated from Madison High School in 1955, and subsequently entered the Navy, where he served as a Seabee, operating large equipment and spending time overseas. When he returned to Madison, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Haase, in 1960. They remained married for 60 years, sharing the joy of raising a family and building a homestead, until Barbara passed away in 2020.
Jerry enjoyed a lifelong career as a journeyman electrician. He was an active member of the local IBEW for over 55 years, during which time, his meticulous attention to the detail of his trade earned him great respect. In his retirement, he continued to be a dedicated member of his union by serving as an electrical inspector and organizing retiree events.
Aside from his amusing character (always ready with the one-liners!), Jerry’s life was defined by his reputation as a talented & generous craftsman. It seemed there was nothing he couldn’t do, from training a horse to building a house! He was a constant source of generosity, always ready to help in any way he could. Jerry had several hobbies throughout his life—farming, gun club, motorcycling, fishing with his Dad and expert polka dancing with his wife—he thoroughly enjoyed them all!
Jerry is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara, and sister, Sandra (Krauter) Skul. He is survived by his daughters Krista Hefner (John), Kelly McGarry (Daniel), Wendy Walk (Gregory), and his brother Joseph Krauter (Gwen). Jerry also leaves his legacy to 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, who have brought him unmeasurable love and joy in his later years.
A memorial reception for friends and family will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2024, 1-4 p.m. at Perry Community Center, 2800 Perry Park Road, Perry, OH. The family would be thankful for any donation made to Hospice of the Western Reserve as an expression of sympathy.
