Douglas A. Havighurst

Douglas A. Havighurst, age 84 of Chardon, passed away peacefully Nov. 20, 2024, at the Mapleview Country Villa of Chardon following a short illness caused by cancer. Doug was born Jan. 2, 1940, in Cleveland to James W. and Helen (nee: Beetham) Havighurst. He was a longtime area resident. Doug was a graduate of Shaker Heights High Class of 1957, Amherst College Class of 1961 and he earned graduate degrees from Case Western Reserve and Cleveland State. He was a math teacher and his employers included the Federal Reserve, University Schools and Lakeland Community College. He founded the Cleveland Chapter of the National Stuttering Association in the 1990’s. He enjoyed running, animals (especially dogs), talking with his friends Tom and Phil, nature walks and spending time with his significant other Esther Neumann and her family. Doug met Esther while they both tutored at Lakeland Community College Learning Center. Survivors include his nephew Bryan (Diane) Havighurst and their twin sons Liam and Garrett of Loveland, OH, and niece Lauren (Jeff) Tackett and their children Katelyn & Charlie of Centerville, VA. Doug, who was a kind, sincere and gentle man, will be missed by his extended family, Esther’s family, and his friends who include his former wife Louise. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Bruce and Alan. As Doug requested there not be a traditional funeral. A small family memorial gathering will be arranged for a later date.
