Betty Mae (nee: Riedel) Carter, 98, a resident of Fairmount Care Center at Breckenridge passed away Nov. 20, 2021. Born Jan. 9, 1923, in Cleveland to William and Edith (nee: Kortz) Riedel, she had been a resident of Gates Mills and Fairport Harbor before moving to Breckenridge 16 years ago. Along with her husband Jack, Betty owned and operated Carter Diamond Tool Corp in Cleveland and later in Willoughby. She was an astute businesswoman, keeping the books and running the office, but she also worked to keep the staff happy. She enjoyed investing, working with the Stephen’s Ministry, and taking flying lessons with Jack. She was an active member of the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club and enjoyed spending time with her family on their boat. She and Jack traveled the Great Lakes and took Power Squadron Classes together. Throughout their lives together, Jack and Betty traveled both nationally and internationally and encouraged her family to do the same. Survivors include her sons John (Marge) Carter of Lyndhurst and Jim (Bunny) Carter of Chardon, 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John “Jack” Carter, Sr and sister Dorothy Corbusier-Anderson. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, at 12pm at the Potti & Marc F. Burr Funeral Homes, 1009 Mentor Ave, Painesville with inurnment to follow at Knollwood Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be from 10am until 12pm on Friday at the funeral home.
