Kevin Andrew Hare passed away on April 2, 2021 at age 51. He was born on February 23, 1970 at Lake West Hospital to Kenneth A. and Maxine E. (Hendrix) Hare. He was born one month early, weighing only 3 lbs. 13 oz.
Kevin suffered with mental disability all his life, but he did not allow it to dampen his love for life. He was unable to walk and talk until the age of five, when he began going to the Deepwood Center and Broadmoor School. Thanks to their excellent staff, he learned not only to walk and talk, but to read and write, as well. Kevin especially loved participating in Special Olympic sporting events. There, he won numerous gold and silver medals in the free throw event and in short distance running. He graduated from Broadmoor in 1993 in a full graduation ceremony. Then he lived under the excellent care of Broadfield Manor Nursing Facility for the next 28 years.
In addition to sports, Kevin loved to sing. One of his most memorable performances was at the school’s Christmas performance, singing “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” which garnered him a loud round of applause. Kevin was also a very sociable person; everyone he met was a friend, and he went out of his way to make everyone feel welcome. He was well known for being upbeat and positive.
Kevin is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Maxine of Mentor; older sister, Kelly Miller of Mentor; nephews Jonathan Miller of Mentor, Eddie Miller of Coldwater, Michigan; Dave (Anna) Miller of Coldwater Michigan; his great-aunt, Catherine Hendrix, of Mentor; his great-aunt, Lela (Art) Roniger, of Eastlake; many loving cousins and honorary sister Norma Aranda of Painesville.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Grover and Genevieve Hendrix, Dorothy and Howard Hare, an infant niece, and his brother-in-law, Ed Miller, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at Mentor Baptist Church, with Pastor Brian Landrum officiating on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 10:30am with a time for friends to call from 10 to 10:30am at the church.
